I came across this article from a box of design magazines I collected when I was at Leeds Poly in the late 80’s. I feel there are so many parallels with the discourse that is currently happening around design education in the UK today.
Much effort has been invested in improvements to the basic design education framework, but can it ever keep pace with the pressures of a desperate society?

A few thoughts. Agree with the comments on many accounts, but design judgment about how things look is still fundamental as is skills development. This article also has little understanding regarding progression to HE from schools or colleges and the ‘deficit’ in design knowledge that students will progress to us with, with what is happening in schools, Ebac etc, also contextual admissions, skills agenda and degree apprenticeships? A rethink of our specialist degrees at UG level would be good to discuss further ‘silos’ of study? Perhaps a more unit/credit degree that allows for collaboration across current subject boundaries?
